Amy Ruth Moore Bass was a devout Christian Woman. She was a native Alabamian, the wife of Elijah Bass Sr., the mother of 10 children; 7 daughters and 3 sons; the grandmother of 12 grand-children. She was a farmer, a gardner, the world's best cook and a very friendly person. Amy Ruth was a Sunday School Teacher and she also sang in the church choir. She was a long time member of Jerusalem AME Church. Amy Ruth loved her family.
She taught all of her children and grandchildren how to love each other, to look-out for one another, and to respect themselves as well as others. By her example, she also taught how to love god and to put god first with all that we do.
As a child my mother Inez Bass and her second eldest sister Esther Bass would send their children to spend the summer months with our grandmother Amy Ruth Bass and Grand-dad Elijah Bass, Sr. Their reason. was simple; it would be a safer and more enriching experience for us to spend our idle summer time in the south, which was somewhat safer than the big city of New York.
During those summer months, each one of my brothers; Eric and Gregory, and my two first cousins, Ahmed and Marten, were assigned various tasks. The main tasks included mowing the rather large lawn and picking various vegetables in the vegetable garden.
Because of my not liking the hot sun, I would seek refuge in the house with my grandmother who would be hard at work preparing breakfast, supper, and dinner. I would always find my way to my grandmothers side helping her prepare those meals under her direction. If I wasn't shucking the many ears of corn, I would be peeling field peas, or rolling out the biscuit dough with a broom-stick, to name a few.
My grandfather, Elijah Bass, Sr. would often chastise me for wanting to stay in the kitchen and often chase me out of my grandmother's kitchen. I would never listen to that chastisement, therefore enabling me to deepen my love for the southern culinary experience. As the years would go by, Hound myself perfecting the art of canning and freezing fruits and vegetables, as well as converting many fruits into jellies, jams, and preserves, under the continued direction of my grandmother, Amy Ruth.
It was that, continuous love, nurturing, and direction that gave me the inspiration to build and name the most superior and authentic southern cuisine restaurant after my grand-mother, Amy Ruth Moore Bass.
It is with the same love that Carl S. Redding, his mom Inez Bass & Family, and the Amy Ruth staff welcomes each one of our valued patrons to Amy Ruth's Home-Style Southern Cuisine Restaurant!
