Sami Kader opened Le Tableau in 1996 to rave reviews. He had previously sharpened his culinary skills at the Four Seasons Hotel, La Côte Basque and Petrossian, before he set his roots in the culinary jungle of the East Village. Le Tableau was for Sami a place to try his hand at sophisticated modern French Bistro food, that incorporated his love of the best ingredients and a relaxed setting. Le Tableau was for Sami a place to try his hand at sophisticated modern French Bistro food, that incorporated his love of the best ingredients and a relaxed setting. Less than two years later Sami opened our sister restaurant, Lavagna, down the block, an Italian Trattoria that has become a neighborhood favorite for many. Sami passed away in June of 2006, but with the support of his East Village family, his wife, Dahlia, has kept the restaurant open in his memory. We have spent the last few months rummaging through Sami’s recipe books and have put together a new menu that for us reflects quintessential Le Tableau cuisine: the food Sami loved the most.
