The most affordable of Mario Batali’s empire is also that rare NYU-area restaurant that attracts a cross-section of New York’s tribes (students, families, dates, groups, visitors). Friendly, raucous and casual, Otto succeeds as a family style pizzeria that never panders or sacrifices quality to sustain bargain basement prices. The enoteca (wine bar) at the front of the restaurant offers an extensive selection of wine by the bottle or half bottle (“quartino” which is more accurately described as a 1/3 bottle) and antipasti and a welcome option for the solo drinker or diner. The menu is organized by appetizers (vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, salad, pasta) and pizza. Striking the perfect balance between comfort Italian food and authentic preciousness (anchovies with breadcrumbs, pasta with broccoli rabe and pine nuts, cured meats), Otto is open non-stop from lunch to midnight, and perfect for a quick drop-in whenever you have a craving for a swiss chard and goat cheese pizza or the unique, rich olive oil gelato.
